A queer arcana: art, magic, and spirit

A queer arcana: art, magic, and spirit

American Prophets: Writers, Religion, and Culture is a powerful new exhibit that takes you on the ultimate exploration through spirituality and storytelling. This isn’t just an exhibit—it’s a shared journey of reflection, inspiration, and connection through the stories that move us all.

Theri largest special exhibit and program series to date, American Prophets, explores the profound ways writing reflects and influences our understanding of religion. Religion is an inherent part of American culture, and throughout our history and into today, writers help deepen our understanding of our beliefs and those of others. From the poet Phyllis Wheatley to the comedian Harold Ramis, writers are driven by their beliefs and the beliefs of those around them, and their work can, in turn, influence countless readers.

Interactive displays and artifacts are displayed throughout the entire museum, such as:

  • Ursula K. Le Guin’s personal copy of the Tao Te Ching
  • Groundhog Day writer Harold Ramis’ pocket-sized primer on Buddhism
  • Louie Pérez’s antique statue of the Santo Niño de Atocha, which inspired one of his songs on Los Lobos’ hit album, Kiko
  •  Rachel Pollack's statue of Persephone and personal altar tools
  • A turtle shell rattle belonging to Brad Wagnon, a Cherokee children’s book author
  • Flannery O’Connor’s rosary and holy water bottle

Rachel Pollack is recognized by the museum as a significant literary figure who blended fiction, comic books, and spirituality. The museum featured her work in "staff picks" for The Beatrix Gates and featured a discussion of her life and work on the "Nation of Writers" podcast, Episode 42.

NOW at the Palm Springs Art Museum

On display through October 18, 2026, Palm Springs, CA

A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit, a major exhibition exploring how queer artists across generations have turned to magic, esoteric spirituality, and occult knowledge as tools for survival, resistance, and world-building. Bringing together work by 35 artists made between 1909 and 2026, the exhibition traces more than a century of artistic engagement with alternative spiritual practices as sources of identity, affirmation, and transformation.

Presented as part of the museum’s Q+ Art initiative, which centers LGBTQ+ artists and histories, A Queer Arcana asks how hidden or mystical knowledge has functioned as a cultural strategy. Drawing on the meaning of arcana—hidden, mystical knowledge—the exhibition considers how alternative spiritual practices have served as a source of connection, affirmation, and transformation for queer artists. Across generations, artists have turned to esoteric systems, divination, ritual, and speculative cosmologies to articulate identity, cultivate community, and imagine new social and spiritual frameworks.

One of the six sections of A Queer Arcana explores tarot and its reinvention by queer artists. Original works for The Shining Tribe Tarot by Rachel Pollack, a trans activist and respected authority on divination, are presented alongside large-scale paintings by Devan Shimoyama and Hilma’s Ghost.

“Queer artists, activists, and cultural producers have long sought spiritual practices outside the mainstream to affirm their identities, build community, and envision new ways of being in an often-oppressive world,” said David Evans Frantz, Curator-at-Large, Q+ Art. “As this exhibition demonstrates, these ideas have found expression in visionary, surprising, and profound works of art.”
